No one was doing anything more dangerous than jumping around and chanting. Maybe it wasn't the best idea to be in the middle of Route 1, but there are other ways to deal with crowds. If the police would just let students and fans celebrate on those few blocks of Route 1 and redirect traffic around them using College Ave and Calvert Rd, then there would be no problems. The police arrive in riot gear all pumped up and ready to fight thinking they are here to face violent protesters and that determines how they treat people. There was no reason for pepper spray, tackling students, hitting people with batons and all the other unnecessary police brutality in response to what was just a peaceful street celebration. I even have a video of a student being tackled for dancing too close to some cops. Unbelievable. The real story here is the cops not having adapted to the evolved, peaceful form of street celebrations that Maryland students and fans do now.
